Skillet – Sick Puppies – Devour the Day Unleashed Tour Review

Last night (2/16/17) Skillet, Sick Puppies and Devour the Day shook Kansas City at the Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland. This show was one of the almost 30 that would be done as a part of the Unleashed Tour 2017. If you didn’t get to go last night, you may want to consider a road trip. It was that good.

Devour the Day kicked off the show with the title track of their latest release, S.O.A.R. They work the stage and the crowd like I’ve never seen. What do I mean by working the crowd? Blake Allison, the lead Singer, enjoys crowd surfing. He does this at almost every show, but it always amazes me. The man jumps into a crowd of people he’s never met while he sings into a mic that isn’t wireless. There are a lot of things that could go wrong here, but he’s willing to be “soar” in the morning if it means the crowd enjoyed the show. I can guarantee you that everyone in the theatre last night had the time of their life.

Sick Puppies came out to put on a great show as they always do. They performed songs from their latest album as well as hits from those previous, including “You’re Going Down.” Since the release of that song, the band’s vocalist Shimon Moore departed and they brought in Bryan Scott to take over as lead vocalist. Bryan does a great job at taking those classic Sick Puppies songs and performing them on stage to a point where you may not even notice the difference. He is also big on crowd participation. Bryan picked out the “craziest person” in the crowd last night and made him the designated mosh pit starter, but last nights crowd didn’t seem to be to into that. All in all, Sick Puppies put on a great show.

Skillet always pulls out all the stops while they’re on tour. The production of the show with all of the lights, CO2 and risers that the guitarists stood on as they played 20 feet above the ground was phenomenal. They kicked off the show with “Feel Invincible,” the heavy-hitting lead single from Unleashed. John Cooper did suffer with some microphone difficulties at the start of the show that did make me wonder if I was at the Grammys, but they got him fixed up right away and off they went. They continued the high-energy show with hits like “Hero,” “Whispers in the Dark,” and “Rise.” I am never disappointed by Skillet’s live show and last night was no exception. I think the fans would agree with me on that.

Overall, the Unleashed Tour 2017 was a great show. Make sure that you keep up to date with all of the shows coming near you with the Big O Tires Concert Calendar and stay tuned in to V100.
