The shocking news greeted us via social media in the early morning hours. Many us, disbelieving, searching for other sources in hopes of it being just another idiot-internet hoax. Our fears were set deeper as more and more reputable news outlets began dropping images and videos of Chris Cornell into their feeds.
Our very own Miss Wendy, Nikki, Ethan Jackson and Sloan among the V100 listeners and fans hit hard with the wake-up news. Soundgarden front-man Chris Cornell was indeed dead at 52.
Detroit Police were peppered with questions and had very little answers. The investigation had been ongoing, but Detroit Police spokesman Michael Woody quote to the Associated Press was ominous, saying that he couldn’t provide details, but noted there were “basic things observed at the scene.”
The final determination came in a statement shortly before 1pm CST from the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office;
“The Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy on 52-year-old Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden musician who died last night in Detroit. The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide. A full autopsy report has not yet been completed. There is no additional information at this time.”
Several reports, including one from a Detroit Police Social Media Manager described “a 52-year-old white male was found dead in a hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel with ‘a band around his neck’.”
Stay with us on-air all day today as we pay tribute to Cornell and his wide body of work in Temple Of The Dog, Soundgarden and Audioslave. We’ll be playing one of his songs every hour until midnight tonight. You can see footage of Soundgarden’s recent concert at the Starlight in Kansas City this past Sunday here.
